what is keyword

In the vast digital landscape, keywords are the guiding factor that navigates users to relevant content. Understanding keywords is essential from unlocking search engine queries to optimizing content for visibility. But what exactly they are? Join us on a journey to know what is keyword and explore its different types.

What is Keyword in Search Engine Optimization?

If I explain what is keyword in a very normal language then keywords are those words or phrases that describe what your content is all about or I say what is the information on your web page. It can be one word or more than one word that’s why I said that keywords are those words or phrases.

Keywords are those words on which we want our web page to rank. For example, if you have a blog related to digital marketing on any web page then you want that whenever a person types any keyword related to that blog or digital marketing like what is digital marketing or digital marketing or digital marketing 2024 etc. Whenever someone types such keywords, he should see my website on the top rank.

I hope that till now you have understood what is keyword. Now, let’s know about what are its various types. So, here we go.

Exploring Different Types of Keywords

A. Short-Tail Keywords

Short-tail keywords usually cover a wide range of topics and are typically one or two words long. Although these keywords have a large search traffic there will be significant competition for them. A short-tail term such as “marketing” may attract a lot of searches but it is not very specific because there are a lot of marketing types like affiliate marketing, content marketing, social media marketing, digital marketing and many more so the competition is very high for that content which is optimized for short-tail keywords.

To understand the short tail keyword, let’s have an example. So, for example, I want to buy shoes online so I type a short tail keyword i.e. shoes in the Google search bar and it gives me the result of every keyword associated with the term shoes like- men’s shoes, women’s shoes, children shoes, Nike shoes etc.

So, here we understand that it is not providing the specific result as we want in our keyword.

B. Long-Tail Keywords

Everyone wants to know what are long-tail keywords and why they are much better than short-tail keywords so let’s understand. Long-tail keywords are more focused and usually include three or more words. Although they may have low search volumes, they typically attract more targeted traffic. As an example, the long-tail term ” Digital marketing service provider in Delhi ” targets a particular group of people with a clear goal in mind.

C. Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) Keywords

LSI keywords are terms that are semantically related to a target keyword or concept. They help search engines understand the context and meaning of content beyond exact keyword matches. Example: For the keyword “apple,” LSI keywords might include “fruit,” “technology,” and “Steve Jobs.

D. Branded Keywords

Branded keywords are defined as those that include the name of a certain business or brand to raise brand recognition and direct users to the company’s official website.

Examples include “Sparx shoes” and “Apple iPhone”.

How Google Crawler Index Web Pages with Keywords

I think I have already given the answer in the definition, keywords are the words on which you want your website to rank. If you know those words on which you want to rank your website then you will put those words in your content. You will tell Google’s crawler that this is my page. It is about this particular subject so what will Google crawler do? It will read it and Google will also know that whenever someone types a query related to digital marketing or what is digital marketing I have to show this page because this page is relevant to this query.

Example Of How Keywords help to rank pages

Let’s take an example, you have an Search Engine Optimization agency in Delhi someone type the best SEO service provider in Delhi. In this, the requirement is that the user wants to know about the best SEO service provider in Delhi. what will he do? He will type the keyword best SEO service provider in Delhi and as a result, he will get some pages that match his requirements. Now He will go to the page where he is getting the exact information he wants. So that’s why we should know what is keyword. If we use the right keyword by using the keyword tool  for research then that page ranks on the top of Google search engine result pages.
